If dental anxiety has kept you from getting the care you need, sedation dentistry might be the answer. But there’s a lot of misinformation out there, so it’s normal to have questions before trying it. Here are answers to some of the most common things people ask.

What Types of Sedation Are Available?

Most practices offer a few different options depending on your level of anxiety and the procedure you’re having. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the mildest form that makes you feel relaxed and, perhaps, a bit giggly.

Oral conscious sedation is a deeper method that involves taking a prescribed pill, about an hour before your appointment. Finally, IV sedation is the strongest option, delivering medication directly into your bloodstream for immediate and potent effects.

Will I Be Unconscious?

None of these methods will render you unconscious. Despite the name “sedation,” you’ll remain conscious and able to respond throughout your appointment. The only difference is that you’ll feel deeply relaxed. In the case of oral or IV sedation, you may not remember much of the procedure at all once the effects wear off!

How Long Do the Effects Last?

The timeframe varies a lot by method. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes of removing the mask you inhale it from, so you can safely drive yourself home. However, oral conscious sedation can linger for up to eight hours, and IV sedation effects can last as long as 24 hours.

For both of the latter options, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home after your appointment. The medication can impair your judgment and sometimes even make you feel a little sleepy.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes, when administered by a trained professional, dental sedation is perfectly safe. In fact, it’s one of the most successful treatments in dentistry. This is because your dentist will review your medical history beforehand to rule out contraindications and see which sedation method, if any, is right for you.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Sedation dentistry is often recommended for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still, or those undergoing more involved procedures like multiple extractions or implant placement.

Sedation dentistry can help you get the care you need without stress. If you’re curious whether this solution is the best fit for your needs, call your dentist. They can walk you through your options and help you find a way to relax at the office that fits your needs—sedation or not.
