Often, this means replacing worn and outgrown protective gear. This season, however, when stocking up on new helmets, shin guards, or special shoes, don’t forget to protect you or your child’s mouth. That’s because according to the Oral Health Foundation, an estimated 13 to 39 percent of all urgent oral health problems are caused by playing sports. So, what are the most common dental emergencies? Here’s three of the biggest dangers to your smile during athletics, and how to protect against them!

Cracked Teeth

Cracked teeth can be extremely painful, and unfortunately very common when playing sports. They often occur following a blow to the mouth which fractures the tooth at the crown and may travel to the roots. Although this type of crack is often visible, it may not be even noticeably painful; however, you may experience discomfort when chewing, sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages, and even missing pieces of enamel that do or don’t expose the tooth’s inner layers. Treatment for this type of damage usually involves repair with a tooth-colored filling, dental crown, or dental bonding. Should the injury spread below the gumline, this is considered a cuspal fracture, which could require a root canal or tooth extraction to prevent it from developing an infection.

Broken Roots

One of the scariest things about broken roots is that you may not even realize your tooth has suffered from any damage at all, since this injury occurs below the gumline, making it easier for it to become infected. Due to the severity of this type of injury, it could result in tooth loss or a root canal if not handled swiftly. Thus, even if you don’t immediately see or feel any serious damage to your smile, it is important to see your emergency dentist as soon as possible to rule out any problems that aren’t immediately noticeable.

Tooth Intrusion

Known as intrusion, this injury occurs when the tooth gets pushed back into the jawbone. Intrusion is more common in children because their alveolar bones are still growing, making it easy for any remaining baby teeth to be forced inward during impact. Worse yet, not only is it painful, but it can cause ankylosis, which occurs when the roots fuse to the alveolar bone, root resorption (a shortening of the roots), and even damage to the sensitive inner filling of the teeth known as the pulp.

What Should I Do in a Dental Emergency?

Even if you can’t see any damage to your teeth following a contusion to mouth or jaw, it is important to be seen by your emergency dentist as soon as possible. This will help rule out any injuries below the gumline or in the center of the tooth, where it may not be as noticeable. First, ensure that you are safe. If you are suffering from excessive bleeding or believe you have dislocated or fractured your jaw, go directly to the ER. Otherwise, call your emergency dentist and explain the situation. They will determine the best time for you to come in based on your symptoms, so you can get the help you need without delay.

Avoiding Dental Emergencies During Sports

While it’s true that you cannot control the actions of your opponent, the good news about dental emergencies is that in many cases, they can be easily prevented. Whether you’ve got a student athlete or you play a sport yourself, it is vitally important to protect your smile with the help of a sports mouthguard every time you play. This can help you avoid painful dental emergencies that could cost you your smile!

Remember, oral injuries can be extremely common when you or your child play sports, which is why it’s so important to protect your teeth and gums before you step onto the field. However, should the unthinkable occur, don’t wait to get help. Contact your emergency dentist at once – it could be the difference between lost teeth and a winning smile!

About Our Dr. Pevzner

Dr. Yonatan Pevzner earned his dental degree from SUNY Buffalo Dental School, and since graduating less than a decade ago has taken over 500 hours of continuing education.
